Richard Reacher sits on his bed in his dorm room, staring down at the mess of half-packed suitcases around him. He graduates in two days. He thinks back to his first days on campus, the thrill from being away from home, the feeling of freedom and hope. Now it is an empty, dark void. He thinks back to the first frat party he went to, the walks on the beach with Olivia, the road trip to Florida. Now it is just a dark void. As empty as the beer kegs they finished at that party many months ago. He zips up the suitcases and lies back on the bed. The feeling he had years ago has withered, died. What will he do when he returns home? Should he even go back? His roommate knocks and reminds him of the party. Reluctantly, he gets up and leaves his darkness behind.
